Mchunu Says He Advised Nkabinde To Record Conversation With ‘Angry’ Mkhwanazi Amid PKTT Dispute

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu revealed he instructed his chief of staff, Cedric Nkabinde, to record a conversation with KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi after feeling threatened during their heated discussions.

Mchunu told Parliament that the KZN commissioner had reacted “angrily” when the issue of disbanding the political killings task team was raised.

“We don’t record people. I’m not aware of anybody in my office who has ever recorded a person. But in this instance, it’s me who advised the chief of staff to say you may need to record your conversations with General Mkhwanazi because of the threats, because he kept on saying General Mkhwanazi is angry,” Mchunu explained.

The minister made the disclosure on Friday during his second day of testimony before Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating alleged corruption within the police service.

As part of his evidence, Mchunu submitted the audio recording between Nkabinde and Mkhwanazi, in which the two discussed the directive to dissolve the political killings task team.

The police minister said the recording was necessary for his safety and to ensure there was a clear record of communications amid growing tensions around the disbandment.

Ramaphosa Agreed with Decision to Disband Task Team, Says Mchunu

Mchunu also told the committee that the decision to dissolve the task team was not made unilaterally. He said it had been discussed with President Cyril Ramaphosa, who, according to him, supported the move.

The minister, currently on leave, concluded his second day of testimony and is expected to continue before the inquiry on Tuesday as investigations into alleged police misconduct deepen.
