Mchunu Denies Asking Businessmen Mogotsi And Matlala To Arrange Cape Town Dinner

Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has strongly refuted allegations that he asked controversial businessmen Brown Mogotsi and Vusimuzi Matlala to organise a dinner in Cape Town earlier this year.

Mchunu clarified that he was not even in the city during the weekend in question, which coincided with the African National Congress (ANC)’s January birthday celebrations. Instead, he said, he was travelling to KwaZulu-Natal to attend a funeral.

The minister made these remarks on the third day of testimony before Parliament’s ad hoc committee probing alleged political interference and corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS). Mchunu stated he has never engaged with either of the businessmen and has never met Matlala in person.

Mchunu Denies Financial Ties and Political Ambitions Linked to Matlala

During the hearing, evidence leader Norman Arendse told the committee that a witness is expected to testify that murder-accused Matlala is funding Mchunu’s alleged ambitions to become either the president or deputy president of the ANC.

However, Mchunu dismissed the claims outright, saying he was unaware of any such connection.

“I have never had any discussion with anyone, Brown Magotsi to be exact, for any dinner, anywhere about any contribution anywhere, and so on,” Mchunu said in his testimony.

He further detailed his movements in January, stating that after taking part in the ANC’s birthday week in George, he left Cape Town on the evening of 8 January to travel to Eshowe for a funeral.

“I deny, with evidence, that I had anything to do with that dinner said to be sponsored by Matlala, nor did I ask him directly or indirectly to organise any dinner,” he added.

Mchunu also rejected accusations that he had benefited financially from Matlala, noting that his critics have failed to produce any proof of such transactions.
