Mchunu Claims Ramaphosa Backed Disbandment Of Political Killings Task Team

Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu appeared before the SAPS Ad Hoc Committee on Friday, confirming that he informed President Cyril Ramaphosa of his decision to disband the controversial Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

The revelation comes as part of ongoing investigations into alleged corruption and political interference within the police service.

When asked by Evidence leader Advocate Norman Arendse if he had notified the President about shutting down the PKTT, Mchunu responded in the affirmative.

In response to committee member Julius Malema, he added: “The answer in the affidavit is that I briefed the president; he agreed with the briefing I gave him.”

Sharp Questioning Over Mkhwanazi Meetings and Task Team Disbandment

Mchunu faced pointed questioning over his refusal to meet KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who had repeatedly sought discussions on urgent policing matters.

“I wanted to meet General Mkhwanazi privately, but it just did not happen,” Mchunu said. He explained that an alleged WhatsApp voice recording between Nkabinde and Mkhwanazi, which contained threats that the commissioner would “fight back,” contributed to his caution.

“I was of sober mind when I issued the directive to disband the task team,” he added, emphasising that his decision was carefully considered.

Mchunu Takes Full Responsibility for PKTT Disbandment Letter

Regarding the letter that officially dissolved the PKTT, Mchunu stated that he drafted it on New Year’s Eve and assumed full accountability.

“I don’t want to leave any doubt about who wrote the letter and why. I therefore take full responsibility. I can assure you that I was sober when I wrote that letter,” he said.

The committee continues to probe the wider implications of the PKTT’s disbandment and the alleged political interference surrounding police operations.
