Suits, Lies And Audicity! McBride Blasts ‘Greedy’ Cedrick Nkabinde In Parliament Showdown

Robert McBride, the former chief of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), has delivered a blistering rebuttal to allegations regarding the controversial departure of investigator Cedrick Nkabinde. Testifying before a parliamentary ad hoc committee, McBride didn’t just defend his record—he went on the offensive, painting a picture of a subordinate driven by vanity rather than justice.

The hearing, which is probing deep-seated corruption within the nation’s criminal justice framework, became a stage for McBride to dismantle Nkabinde’s previous testimony.

The Suspension Scandal: McBride Produces Receipts

A central pillar of Nkabinde’s grievance was the claim that McBride personally suspended him in 2018 as retaliation for a whistleblower report. However, he labelled this narrative a total fabrication.

To anchor his defence, the former Ipid boss presented a formal suspension notice dated 4 June 2018. Crucially, the document was signed by Parbathie Maharaj, who then headed Ipid’s KwaZulu-Natal wing, rather than McBride himself.

“The first lie was that I suspended him,” McBride told the committee. “That is not true. Nkabinde was suspended by his supervisor in KwaZulu-Natal. His suspension had nothing to do with me.”

Ipid Corruption Probe: The Phahlane Connection

The friction between the two men reportedly ignited during the high-stakes investigation into former acting national police commissioner, Lt-Gen Khomotso Phahlane. While Nkabinde was initially drafted into the task team to assist, McBride revealed that the investigator was sidelined after he allegedly kept secret meetings with other officers under wraps.

McBride claimed these outside influences were intended to “scuttle” the probe into Phahlane. Once Nkabinde was removed from the elite team and sent back to his provincial post, McBride says the investigator launched a “rampage” of complaints. He further dismissed Nkabinde’s suggestions of a conspiracy against Phahlane as entirely without merit.

Greed and Flashy Lifestyles: The Settlement Truth

Addressing the investigator’s exit from the agency, he contested the idea that Nkabinde was coerced into resigning. He produced legal correspondence suggesting that it was actually Nkabinde’s own lawyers who initiated the settlement talks to facilitate his departure.

Beyond the legalities, McBride offered a scathing character assessment of Nkabinde, who currently serves as the chief of staff in the police ministry. He suggested the investigator was more concerned with the trappings of wealth than the rigours of the job.

“Nkabinde is a greedy person who wants acknowledgement without putting in the work. He likes money. We were aware of him buying 10 suits at a time and similar behaviour. He enjoys a flashy lifestyle,” he stated.
