Mayville Man Escapes Kidnappers In Sugarcane Field After Harrowing Ordeal

A 31-year-old man from Mayville, KwaZulu-Natal, narrowly escaped death after being kidnapped and assaulted before managing to flee from his captors early Monday morning.

The unemployed builder, who is also a father to a young daughter, told Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) officers that he had been hiking near Bassas Mall at around 19:30 on Sunday when he accepted a lift from four people in a silver Toyota Etios. The group consisted of three men and a woman.

Minutes into the ride, the occupants robbed him of his Samsung J1 cellphone and drove to an unknown location, where they repeatedly assaulted him and chained his feet with padlocks.

The victim revealed that he was forced into the trunk of the car while the suspects made several stops, which he believed were at taverns or parties.

At around 04:00 on Monday, the kidnappers removed him from the trunk near a sugarcane plantation. “I believed that they were going to murder me and dump my body,” he told officers.
