Mawhoo Under Fire After “Drinking And Driving” Jaecoo Ad Backfires: “This Is Wildly Irresponsible!”

Iyo, Mzansi is fuming! Social media went up in flames after Gucci queen Mawhoo dropped what was meant to be a cute car promo — but ended up looking like a full-blown “drinking and driving” campaign instead.
In the now-deleted video, Mawhoo — who was promoting luxury car brand Jaecoo — is seen walking toward a car with its boot open, picnic-style setup ready. All was cute until sis decided to pop open a bottle of Laurent Perrier (yes, that bubbly brand) and pour herself a drink… before sliding straight into the driver’s seat and starting the engine.

Social media didn’t need a second take. Within minutes, timelines were flooded with outrage, disbelief, and disappointment — with many calling the clip irresponsible and dangerous, especially coming from a public figure with major brand deals.

@msk_sinceday1 didn’t mince words: “This right here is why drunk driving numbers stay high. Imagine defending drinking while driving content?”
@ofentseza added: “There’s drinking and driving content on the TL and NO Laurent Perrier doesn’t have a non-alcoholic variant. Oversight or just normalized behaviour?”
@dineocampell, who’s worked in brand campaigns, chimed in: “In my years of approving content, this is one of the first red flags. No 🔞 sign, no disclaimer, nothing. That’s just reckless.”
And @ninimthimkhulu summed up what many were thinking: “The focus shifted from showing off the car to showing off irresponsibility. This was a bad call, period.”

“Sis, Not Everything Luxury Needs Champagne”
From Twitter to Threads, people questioned why alcohol always seems to be part of every “soft life” influencer moment.
@zethumbona wrote: “I don’t understand why good life always has to be tied to alcohol. Why not promote drinking water?!”
@lerato_morapedi echoed the sentiment: “The fact that we’re debating if it was alcoholic or not shows how badly this was executed. Just don’t drink in the ad, period.”
Damage Control Mode
After the backlash got too loud, Mawhoo quietly deleted the video from her socials — but by then, the internet had already done its thing. Screenshots, reposts, and memes made sure the moment wasn’t going anywhere.
As one user, @smangeleleesow1, put it bluntly: “Influencers need to take this seriously. Drinking and driving isn’t aesthetic, it’s a crime.”
Listen, sis can rock a designer fit and a beat face with the best of them — but glamorising drinking and driving? That’s a hard no.
