Matric Results Set For Release On 12 January, Says Basic Education Department

The Department of Basic Education has confirmed that the 2025 matric results will be released on 12 January next year, marking the final step in a nationwide examination process that is already well under way.

According to departmental spokesperson Terence Khalaa, President Cyril Ramaphosa will receive the results and overall pass rate ahead of the official announcement.

Marking is scheduled to begin next Monday and continue until 18 December, with more than 50,000 top markers selected to manage the process across the country.

Khalaa noted that early phases of marking have already been completed in several provinces. “We have seen the first phases of early marking, which is concluded across the provinces of the Western Cape, Gauteng, as well as Mpumalanga.

“I think we’ve seen a variety of ways in which the system’s rigour has been tested, but once more, the system has definitely shown its strength, and the preparedness that we do from the beginning of the year really does show itself in a moment like this,” he said.

Nationwide Marking Effort Underway Ahead of Results Release

The department emphasised that the large-scale marking effort aims to ensure accuracy, fairness, and consistency across all provinces. Khalaa highlighted that the system has demonstrated strong preparedness despite challenges during the examination period.

He explained that criminal activity and gang-related incidents had disrupted some examination centres in the Western Cape. However, the department managed to prevent any major setbacks.

DBE Assures Integrity of the Matric Exams Despite Challenges

Khalaa confirmed that all matric candidates were able to complete their exams despite the disruptions. “What this does, it underscores the integrity of the NSC, just ensure that all candidates remain supported and accommodated,” he added.

The department is expected to provide further updates as the marking process progresses.
