Matric Pupil Takes His Own Life After Exam Cheating Incident

Byletts Combined School in East London has been left reeling after the death of 17-year-old matric pupil Libone Yaka, who reportedly took his own life shortly after being implicated in an exam cheating incident.
According to school officials, Libone was one of four pupils confronted over suspected misconduct during an examination on Monday, and the only one who immediately admitted his involvement.
He returned to his school hostel after the exam, where fellow boarders later discovered his body. It is believed that he used his school tie to hang himself.
Matric Pupil Remembered Fondly
Libone’s principal described him as a quiet, respectful and disciplined learner who was always smiling, adding that he was deeply passionate about rugby, public speaking and dreamed of becoming a civil engineer.

His family say he may have taken the blame out of fear, remorse and a strong sense of respect for authority. They emphasised that he was not a troubled child, but one who valued honesty and responsibility.
School Community in Shock as Probe Continues
Police have opened an inquest into his death and confirmed that no foul play is suspected at this stage.
Social workers and trauma counsellors have been deployed to support shaken learners and staff at the school, with the Eastern Cape Department of Education expressing condolences to the bereaved family and concern for the broader school community.
