Matric Exams 2025: DBE Rolls Out GPS Trackers To Curb Exam Paper Leaks

In a bid to protect the integrity of South Africa’s 2025 matric exams, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) has introduced GPS trackers on trucks transporting examination papers. The new security measure aims to prevent leaks that have previously disrupted national assessments.

Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube announced the initiative on Monday during a media briefing in Skukuza, Mpumalanga. She explained that each truck carrying the exam materials will be monitored at every stage of distribution, ensuring that no unauthorised access or tampering takes place.

“This year, we’ve implemented stricter controls to ensure the credibility of the examinations. The trucks will undergo checks at each point to avoid the costly mishaps experienced in the past,” said Gwarube.

Record Number of Learners Set to Write Matric 2025 Exams

According to the department, over 900,000 candidates have registered to write the National Senior Certificate (NSC) exams this year — the highest number recorded to date.

A total of 6,955 examination centres have been confirmed nationwide, including 6,376 public schools and 579 independent schools.

Minister Gwarube highlighted the magnitude of the operation, describing it as “the largest public assessment in the education system.”

“Outside of elections, there is no larger event that requires this level of logistical coordination,” she said, adding that the department has been preparing throughout the year to mitigate risks associated with exam paper leaks.

The DBE has mobilised a large network of professionals to oversee and support the 2025 examinations. There will be nearly 200 marking centres across the country, staffed by more than 40,000 markers, invigilators, and data capturers.

“Integrity is not negotiable. It is the cornerstone of the National Senior Certificate, and of public trust in our education system,” Minister Gwarube stressed.
