Matric Exam Season Kicks Off: D-Day For Students In Gauteng

As the sun rises on Monday, a momentous occasion unfolds for thousands of matrics across South Africa. D-day signifies the commencement of the final examinations, with candidates gearing up to tackle the English and Afrikaans paper 3 in Gauteng.

With over 800,000 full and part-time candidates registered, this year’s examination cycle promises to be both competitive and crucial for the future of these students.

Key Figures and Examination Logistics

In Gauteng alone, more than 189,000 candidates are expected to sit for the first round of exams across numerous examination centres. This significant number underscores the importance of these assessments in the educational landscape of South Africa.

The Basic Education Minister, Siviwe Gwarube, alongside Gauteng MEC Matome Chiloane, is set to visit Soshanguve East Secondary School to lend their support and oversight to the inaugural day of testing.

A Shift in Examination Scheduling

This year’s format marks a strategic shift, as all official languages will begin with paper three, a break from the traditional practice of conducting these exams later in the exam timetable. This change is expected to enhance focus and alleviate the pressure on matriculants as they navigate through their final year examinations.

In the previous year, Gauteng recorded an impressive 85.4% pass rate, positioning it as the third-best performing province after Free State and KwaZulu-Natal. The rigorous eight-week examination period culminates on the 28th of November.
