Matric Class Of 2024 Achieves Historic 87.3% Pass Rate

Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube announced the 2024 National Senior Certificate (NSC) matric results on Monday night, revealing a record-breaking national pass rate of 87.3%. This marks a significant improvement from 82.9% in 2023, continuing a steady upward trend from 80.1% in 2022 and 76.4% in 2021.

“This year, every province achieved a pass rate above 84%,” Gwarube said, noting that 2024 produced the highest number of Bachelor passes in history.

Provincial Highlights

• Free State retained its position as the top-performing province with a 91.0% pass rate, up from 89.0% in 2023.
• KwaZulu-Natal ranked second with an 89.5% pass rate, a 3.2% improvement.
• Gauteng followed at 88.4%, increasing its pass rate from 85.4% in 2023.
• North-West Province took fourth place with 87.5%, reflecting a 5.9% increase.
• Western Cape came in fifth at 86.6%, showing a 5% improvement.
• KwaZulu-Natal also recorded the highest number of Bachelor passes, followed by Gauteng and the Eastern Cape. Meanwhile, Mpumalanga and Limpopo showed notable improvement in distinctions compared to 2023.

Court Ruling on Matric Results Publication

The release of the results followed a contentious legal battle between the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Information Regulator over the publication of matric results in newspapers.

Last Wednesday, the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria dismissed an urgent application by the regulator to block the publication, ruling that the regulator’s urgency was “self-made.”

The regulator argued that publishing results violated learners’ privacy by exposing personal information. In December, the regulator fined the DBE R5 million for failing to comply with an enforcement notice prohibiting the publication. The DBE has until January 22, 2025, to pay or arrange an installment plan.

IEB Results Also Released

In addition to the NSC results, approximately 13,250 learners registered for the IEB National Senior Certificate exams this year. The results, approved by Umalusi, South Africa’s quality assurance body, confirm the integrity of the examination process.

Matric results for both the NSC and IEB examinations will be published in Independent Media newspapers on Tuesday, January 15, 2025.

Gwarube celebrated the achievements, saying, “This year’s historic pass rate is a testament to the hard work of our educators, learners, and education stakeholders despite the challenges faced.”
