Matlala Allegedly Paid R500,000 To Support Senzo Mchunu’s ANC Presidential Bid

A witness testifying before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry has claimed that businessman and criminal suspect Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala made a substantial contribution to Senzo Mchunu’s presidential campaign within the ANC.

The commission, which is probing allegations of corruption and criminal conduct within the criminal justice system, heard that Matlala allegedly provided R500,000 to back Mchunu’s bid for the party’s top position.

According to the witness, identified only as Witness C, Matlala revealed the payment on the day of his arrest in May 2025.

Matlala’s Alleged Links to Mchunu

Witness C told the inquiry that Matlala had boasted of connections to Minister Mchunu shortly after being taken into custody. This revelation follows Mchunu’s testimony before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee last week, where he denied having a personal relationship with the businessman.

The witness further alleged that Vusimuzi Cat mentioned offering additional assistance to ANC members by covering plane tickets and accommodation for those attending party functions.

“Yeah, I jokingly asked if he believed Minister Mchunu will succeed in the presidency campaign for the ANC, and he indicated that now he did not believe that the Minister will win in his campaign, but he was afraid of discouraging him,” said Witness C.

The inquiry continues to hear evidence from various witnesses as it examines the extent of alleged criminal interference and corruption within state institutions.
