Matlala Linked To BMW In Taxi Boss Shooting As Thobejane Case Explodes In Court

Matlala Linked To BMW In Taxi Boss Shooting As Thobejane Case Explodes In Court

The state has linked controversial Gauteng businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala to a BMW that was used in the shooting of taxi boss Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni. This emerged on Monday during Matlala’s formal bail application at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court, where prosecutors argued he poses a serious risk if released.

The prosecutor read from the investigating officer’s supplementary affidavit, claiming Vusimuzi arranged for the BMW used in the 2022 Centurion shooting to be stored at his girlfriend’s residence.

The state further suggested Matlala may have wanted Sibanyoni dead due to his close association with Zanemvula Jothan “Mswazi” Msibi, a rival of Sibanyoni.

Centralisation of Dockets and New Charges Looming

The prosecution announced plans to consolidate two additional Pretoria dockets with the current case, linking Matlala to the shootings of Sibanyoni and Pretoria DJ Seunkie “DJ Vettys” Mokubong.

Matlala is now expected to face charges of attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder in those cases.

Through his lawyer, Advocate Laurance Hodes SC, Matlala denied involvement, insisting he had nothing to do with the attacks on Sibanyoni, DJ Vettys, or his ex-girlfriend, actress Tebogo Thobejane.

The state remains firm in its opposition to bail, despite Matlala offering house arrest and saying he could afford R100 000 bail. Judgment on his bail application has been postponed to September 17.

Thobejane Shooting Case: Co-Accused and Ongoing Trauma

Matlala was arrested on May 14, 2025. He is facing multiple charges alongside his wife, Tsakani, 36, alleged hitmen Musa Kekana, 35, and Tiego Floyd Mabusela, 47, and Nthabiseng Nzama, 23.

They are accused of conspiracy, attempted murder, fraud, and money laundering linked to the October 2023 shooting of Thobejane and her two friends, Anele Malinga and Khumbulani Ncube.

The attack left Malinga paralysed, while Thobejane, wounded in the foot, fled South Africa fearing for her life. She now resides abroad at an undisclosed location, SurgeZirc SA has learned.
