Matlala Defence To Launch Fresh Bail Bid As New Evidence Emerges In High Court Case

The defence team for controversial businessman Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has confirmed plans to submit a fresh bail application, this time relying on what it says are new facts before the Johannesburg High Court.

Matlala and his co-accused appeared in court on Friday, where the matter was postponed to Thursday next week to allow for further consultations between legal teams and their clients.

The businessman is facing 11 counts of attempted murder, alongside several additional charges, stemming from a series of alleged assassination plots.

New Bail Application Based on Additional Evidence

The charges relate to failed attacks on Matlala’s former partner, Tebogo Thobejane, businessman Joe Sibanyoni, and music producer Seunkie Mokubong, popularly known as DJ Vetteys.

Addressing the court, Matlala’s attorney, Annelene van den Heever, said the defence required time to prepare the new bail application and secure the necessary documentation from her client.

“My lord, after having consulted with my client, I have already approached my learned friend. We ask that the matter stand down till Thursday.

“We got some instructions at this time and we need to have access to the client and that obviously means that he has to sign certain affidavits that relates to the issue of a bail application on new facts which obviously would potentially alleviate a lot of the issues we are dealing with.”

High Court Sets Next Date for Matlala Case

The court agreed to the postponement, clearing the way for the defence to formalise its application when the case resumes next week.

The embattled businessman remains in custody as the legal process continues, with the state yet to indicate how it will respond to the proposed bail bid based on the newly cited facts.
