Mastermind Behind Wynberg Court Shooting Arrested, Appears In Court

Shireen Matthews, 35, made a brief but highly publicised appearance at the Wynberg magistrate’s court on Monday, following her arrest in connection with the deadly courtroom shooting of Dingalomoya Chintso.

The chilling incident took place on April 10 inside the Wynberg regional court, sending fear through the community and prompting a swift and  police response.

Chintso, 49, a former taxi driver from Vrygrond facing charges of murder and illegal possession of a firearm, was gunned down in a suspected gang-linked execution.

The state alleges Matthews acted as the mastermind behind the attack and conspired with members of the notorious Junky Funky Kidz (JFK) gang to carry it out.

Tight Security As Matthews Appears Before Magistrate

Matthews, dressed in black pants, a hoodie, socks and flip flops, tried to shield her face from the media frenzy as she entered the courtroom.

When asked by the magistrate if there was anything wrong with her face, she replied, “I’m fine … There’s a hundred people taking photos of me.”

The case has been postponed to April 23 for further bail proceedings.

In light of the serious nature of the case, tight security was evident at the court.

High-ranking law enforcement officials, including Western Cape acting commissioner Gen Bongani Maqashalala and the head of the serious and violent crimes unit Brig Leon Hanana, were in attendance.

More Arrests Expected

Speaking to the media outside the courthouse, Gen Maqashalala confirmed Matthews is believed to be the “brains” behind the premeditated murder.

He added that police had made a second arrest and were actively pursuing additional suspects linked to the crime.

“We have identified four people, and we expect to make six arrests in total,” said Maqashalala.

“We’ve increased police presence in Vrygrond and recovered several firearms.

Our criminal intelligence team has completed a preliminary threat assessment, which led us to increase court security.”

He further stated that discussions will be held with the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development to improve access control measures at courts across the Western Cape.
