Massive Joburg Water Shutdowns Next Week — Dozens Of Suburbs To Run Dry

Joburg Water has warned thousands of residents that planned maintenance and infrastructure upgrades will cause water outages across several city regions next week.

The shutdowns, scheduled for 9–12 March 2026, aim to improve long-term water supply reliability but will leave many suburbs with low pressure or no water for extended periods.

Joburg Seven-Day Maintenance Hits Kensington and Surrounds

Region F will experience the most extensive disruption. A seven-day water interruption will run from 9 March 7am to 15 March 3pm, affecting:

  • Kensington & Kensington South
  • Denver
  • Malvern & Malvern East
  • Cleveland
  • Jeppestown
  • George Goch

Joburg Water said the maintenance is a “dummy run for six days prior to commencing structural repairs inside the reservoir.” Customers will receive supply through a bypass pipeline during this period, and the utility urges residents to report any anomalies.

Shorter, Targeted Shutdowns Across Randpark Ridge, Alexandra & Linbro Park

Randpark Ridge Extension 74: 10 March, 8am–4pm, Benguela Avenue only, no water during pipe tie-in works.

Alexandra, Linbro Park, Marlboro, Lakeside, Eastgate, Buccleuch: 10 March, 6am–11:59pm, entire suburbs affected as new pipes are tied into the mainline.

Joburg Water advises residents to prepare for no water and watch for announcements regarding alternative supply points.

Low Pressure or Outages in Stretford Extension 4

Region G residents in Stretford Extension 4 will experience disruptions on 10 March from 8am–5pm while a water reticulation pipeline is relocated. Water availability may range from low pressure to complete outages depending on conditions.

Sweeping Northern Johannesburg Shutdowns

The largest single planned operation affects Region A on 12 March, from 9am–9pm. All streets in the following areas will lose water:

  • Carlswald, Erands, Summerset, Noordwyk, Sagewood Ext. 18–24
  • Crowthorne, Kyalami AH, Kyalami Gardens, Kyalami Estates, Kyalami Ridge, Kyalami Heights, Kyalami Hills
  • Barbeque Downs, Vorna Valley
  • Jukskei View (south of N1, north of Jukskei River)
  • Blue Hills Ext. 8 & 9

Disruptions are due to the Erand Tower tie-in and infrastructure upgrades along Walton Road. Alternative water supply points have been set up at locations including Noordwyk Spar, Crowthorne Spar, Kyalami Corner, Barbeque Downs (Shakespeare & Dickens), George & 15th Road, and several others.

Joburg Water confirmed that all planned works aim to ensure “improved service delivery and continuity of water supply” once completed.
