Massive Drug Bust In Eastern Cape Leads To R50 Million Crystal Meth Seizure

A 35-year-old man from Gauteng is now in police custody after one of the largest drug busts in recent months.

The arrest took place in the Eastern Cape during a meticulously planned interprovincial operation, which involved multiple provinces, including Free State, Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, and Western Cape.

The operation was focused on targeting the illegal drug trade, particularly crystal meth trafficking, which continues to plague South Africa.

R50 Million Worth Of Crystal Meth Seized

The operation, led by the Aliwal North Detectives and Crime Intelligence (CI) team, resulted in the seizure of 313.5 kg of crystal meth.

The drugs, hidden in 12 large bags, were found aboard a truck suspected of transporting illegal substances.

The street value of the seized meth is estimated to be a staggering R50 million.

Police received intelligence report about the truck traveling from Smithfield to Aliwal North, prompting the team to take swift action.

Coordinated Arrest

At around 10:30 a.m., officers intercepted the truck at the Aliwal North bridge and escorted it into town for inspection.

With the help of the K9 Unit and the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC), a thorough search revealed the massive stash of crystal meth.

The truck owner, who was present at the scene, was promptly arrested.

He now faces serious charges related to drug trafficking and is expected to appear in the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court soon.

The truck, also seized during the operation, will be used as evidence.
