Massive CIT Robbery Foiled In Soshanguve: 3 Suspects Killed, 13 Arrested In Firefight

A meticulously coordinated cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery was dramatically foiled in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria, resulting in the deaths of three suspects and the arrest of thirteen others.

Law enforcement units from across Gauteng swooped in after receiving intelligence about a planned robbery in the area, culminating in a massive shootout in Rietgat.

As SAPS and multiple specialized crime-fighting units approached the scene of a cash van bombing, they were met with heavy gunfire from suspects traveling in six vehicles.

A deadly exchange followed, leaving several suspects wounded and others fatally shot.

Among the suspects’ vehicles was a Toyota Hilux, which hijacked a Toyota Starlet during the escape attempt.

The Starlet was later found abandoned nearby.

Weapons, Explosives, And Stolen Cash Seized from Crime Scene

Police recovered four unlicensed rifles, a handgun, explosives, and a large sum of stolen cash from the suspects’ vehicles.

Eight vehicles were seized, including a Mercedes-Benz used to ram the cash van and others used in the execution of the robbery: a Toyota Corolla, VW Polo, Chery Tiggo SUV, and a Haval SUV.

Several of these vehicles were identified as stolen or hijacked, linked to active case dockets in Rosebank, Roodepoort, and Rietgat.

In addition to weapons and vehicles, officers also confiscated hand gloves, false registration plates, cellphones, and other key evidence.

The suspects now face multiple serious charges, including attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Public And Police Casualties Confirmed in Violent Clash

Unfortunately, the high-intensity shootout also resulted in casualties among civilians and police officers.

Two members of the public were caught in the crossfire, one of whom tragically lost their life.

Two SAPS officers were also shot and are currently receiving medical attention.

The operation involved a joint task force including the SAPS Counter Intelligence Unit, DPCI Gauteng Multi-Disciplinary Tracking Team, Gauteng TRT, Anti-Gang Unit, Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations, Tracker Connect, Gemini Global Defense, and BadBoyz Security.

Investigations into the broader criminal network are ongoing.
