Massive 28-Car Pileup In Ekurhuleni Leaves Two Seriously Injured

A major 28-car pileup on the N12 West in Edenvale, Ekurhuleni, has left two people seriously injured, with eight others sustaining minor injuries. The crash, which occurred on Tuesday, has caused significant traffic disruptions, forcing road closures as cleanup operations continue.

Authorities Open Investigation into Reckless Driving

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) spokesperson Ann Makgatho confirmed that the two seriously injured drivers were rushed to separate hospitals for emergency treatment. A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened at Bedfordview SAPS as authorities investigate the cause of the collision.

“The N12 remains closed as cleanups and investigations are still ongoing. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes,” Makgatho said.

Deadly Accidents And Pileup Plague Ekurhuleni Roads

This latest crash comes just weeks after a horrific bus accident on the R21 near OR Tambo International Airport claimed the lives of 14 people. Seventy-seven others were injured and transported to various hospitals for medical care.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Doctor Xhakaza revealed that preliminary investigations into the R21 bus crash suggest “sudden braking” may have led to the driver losing control. Authorities are still verifying details, with video footage from SANRAL CCTV cameras being analysed for further evidence.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) confirmed that the bus driver was among the seriously injured and is currently receiving treatment at Edenvale Hospital.

Government Pledges Support for Crash Victims

President Cyril Ramaphosa and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi have extended their condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the R21 bus tragedy. The City of Ekurhuleni has also pledged to assist the affected families while officials compile a full report on the crash.

As authorities work to finalise investigations into both incidents, motorists are urged to exercise caution on the roads to prevent further tragedies.
