Masemola Says He Never Supported Senzo Mchunu’s Move To Disband PKTT

National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has publicly stated that he never supported Minister Senzo Mchunu’s decision to disband the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

Testifying before Parliament’s ad hoc committee probing police corruption on Thursday, Masemola said Mchunu failed to give a valid reason for the directive.

He told the committee that the instruction took police leadership by surprise, including KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who reportedly called him to express his concern.

Disbandment Decision Raises Eyebrows

Masemola praised the task team, describing it as “doing exceptional work” before the sudden order came through from Mchunu. He noted that most of his testimony focused on the circumstances surrounding the team’s disbandment and questioned the manner in which the decision was executed.

He said the process appeared “suspicious” and suggested that it could have been handled differently. Despite his objections, the police boss said he had no option but to comply with the minister’s directive.

Masemola reiterated his belief that the task team should have remained operational, especially with local government elections approaching next year. He argued that its presence was critical to preventing further political assassinations in hotspots such as KwaZulu-Natal.

“Firstly, I don’t agree with the disbandment. I don’t know why it is being done. This directive is not a request, it’s something that I must do and I don’t know what is behind it,” Masemola told the committee.

He maintained that continuing the work of the task team would strengthen efforts to curb politically motivated violence in the country.
