Masemola Praises Parliament Committee’s Professionalism During Police Corruption Inquiry

National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola has expressed satisfaction with the conduct of Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating corruption within the police service. Speaking after concluding his two-day testimony, Masemola said the process was fair and conducted in good faith.

Masemola appeared before the committee as part of its probe into allegations of misconduct and political interference within the South African Police Service (SAPS). He described his experience as positive, noting that he held no resentment following the intensive questioning.

Testimony Ends After Intense Questioning

The commissioner’s testimony wrapped up on Thursday after he faced a series of probing questions from Members of Parliament. One of the main concerns raised was his compliance with Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s directive to disband the political killings task team.

Masemola was pressed on why he did not oppose the minister’s order, given the task team’s importance in investigating politically motivated crimes. He maintained his composure throughout the session, providing detailed responses to MPs’ queries.

Admits Agreement with Claims of Political Interference

During the hearings, Masemola also addressed KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi’s claims of political interference in police operations. He acknowledged that he agreed with Mkhwanazi’s assessment, a statement that drew considerable attention from the committee.

Despite the challenging questions, the national police commissioner reaffirmed his appreciation for the committee’s approach.

“I’m quite happy with how the committee conducted its business. I don’t have any hard feelings; I’m quite comfortable. I thank the members and the chairperson, Soviet Lekganyane, and all members of the committee,” he said.
