Mary De Haas Says Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi And Dumisani Khumalo Lack Credibility

Crime activist Mary De Haas has told Parliament that KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi and Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo are not credible leaders within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

She also claimed that Mkhwanazi was wrongly promoted to acting commissioner during the tenure of former police minister Bheki Cele.

De Haas further questioned Khumalo’s qualifications to lead Crime Intelligence and accused National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola of lying under oath.

Appearing before the parliamentary ad hoc committee investigating allegations against the police on Tuesday, De Haas delivered a sharply critical assessment of current policing structures.

She singled out the Political Killing Task Team (PKTT), accusing it of abusing its powers and wasting resources that could be deployed elsewhere.

She defended her previous calls for the PKTT to be disbanded by Minister Senzo Mchunu, arguing that the task team’s conduct undermines effective policing.

Asked by committee member David Skosana whether she considered Mkhwanazi and Khumalo credible, De Haas was unequivocal.

“I don’t believe General Mkhwanazi is credible. Is General Khumalo credible? Nope, definitely not,” said De Haas.

However, the DA’s Ian Cameron cautioned De Haas about making statements that could be defamatory if not backed by evidence.

“I think Honourable David Skosana asked if certain people are credible. If you make a statement like that you need to be able to back it up,” said Cameron.

De Haas has concluded her testimony, with Deputy National Commissioner Tebello Mosikili expected to take the stand today.
