South Africa… this could have ended very differently. Beloved comedian Marc Lottering and his husband Anwar McKay are counting their blessings after surviving Cyclone Gezani during what was meant to be a romantic Valentine’s escape in Mozambique.

Yes, a cyclone. On holiday. During breakfast.

The couple had jetted off to picturesque Tofo Beach, in Mozambique’s Inhambane province, when Mother Nature decided to switch the script completely.

Cyclone Gezani Turns Dream Getaway Into Nightmare

The tropical storm, named Gezani, tore through parts of Mozambique after leaving devastation in Madagascar, where dozens have reportedly lost their lives. In Mozambique alone, four people have tragically died, and thousands have been displaced as homes were destroyed and communities flattened.

But back to Marc and Anwar… Before things escalated, Anwar posted a now chilling clip of their beachfront villa. The wind was howling, staff were visibly scrambling to secure the property, and waves were aggressively pounding the shore.

Meanwhile? The two comedians were calmly sitting down for breakfast.

Anwar even joked: “It’s my first cyclone. If you don’t hear from me again…”

At the time, it felt like humour. In hindsight? Absolutely terrifying.

He later admitted he was in denial, confessing that cyclones always felt like something you watch on international news — happening to “other people, in faraway places”. Until suddenly, he was in that faraway place.

Marc Lottering “Praying in Tongues” During Cyclone Chaos

Marc also shared footage, and let’s just say — the jokes temporarily left the building.

In true Marc fashion, he quipped that the storm had him “praying in tongues”, adding that he stared at his breakfast wondering if it would be his last poached egg.

Their rented seaside home suffered serious damage in the aftermath, forcing them to relocate to a hotel. Thankfully, the cyclone moved through relatively quickly, and the couple confirmed they were safe and unharmed.

While the couple survived to tell the tale, many families across Mozambique and Madagascar were not as fortunate.

Madagascar has reported 59 fatalities so far, and the government has declared a national emergency. The destruction is said to have caused damages running into billions of rand. Entire communities have been displaced, with tens of thousands left without shelter.
