Manhunt After Ugandan ‘Lover’ Swindles SAPS Captain Of Her R3 Million Pension

In a tale that sounds like it could be the plot of a crime drama, a South African Police Service (SAPS) captain has been scammed of her R3 million pension by a Ugandan ‘boyfriend.’

The North West police have now launched a manhunt to track down the audacious scammer who managed to pull off this con.

The story begins around September last year at a shopping complex in Rustenburg, where the 53-year-old police captain met her alleged suitor.

Introducing himself as Dr. Kalvin Sofika, the Ugandan national in his late 30s quickly established a romantic relationship with the unsuspecting woman.

According to North West provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, the pair exchanged contact details and began dating shortly after that.

As the relationship progressed, Sofika started to ask the police captain to take loans for him, which she did. He also convinced her to resign from her job, promising that her luck was about to change.

The love-struck captain resigned at the end of November last year, believing she would no longer depend on her salary for survival. To seal the deal, Sofika even took her to a traditional healer who confirmed that she should quit her job to start making money.

Unfortunately, the police captain’s dreams of financial freedom turned into a nightmare. She lost her pension money and the loans she took for Sofika, totalling nearly R3 million.

The police have confirmed that the suspect has since relocated, and no arrests have been made. Brigadier Mokgwabone stated that the investigation is ongoing, and the North West police are determined to bring the scammer to justice.
