Mangaung Wardens To Apply For Bail In Inmate Murder Case

Four correctional officers from Mangaung Correctional Centre—Lebohang Martins, Boitumelo Mooi, Cedric Motshabi, and Mojalefa Maarman, are set to apply for bail on Friday, April 25, 2025, at the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court.

The wardens have been charged with murderand defeating the ends of justice following the death of inmate Mpho Mkhumbeni.

Mkhumbeni, who had been serving a life sentence for murder since 2014, died under suspicious circumstances on March 12.

Reports suggested that  he was assaulted by the wardens and pepper-sprayed during an unauthorized cell raid.

His death has raised questions over conditions and conduct within South Africa’s private prison system.

Post-Mortem Links Death To Pepper Spray, Blunt Force Injuries

A post-mortem examination confirmed that Mkhumbeni died from complications related to excessive pepper spray exposure and blunt force trauma carried by the wardens.

The findings point to possible abuse and have raised concerns about systemic misconduct at Mangaung Correctional Centre.

The accused wardens made a brief appearance in court on April 23 before their bail hearing was scheduled.

The Department of Correctional Services has pledged full cooperation with law enforcement authorities and internal disciplinary action where necessary.
