Manenberg Mom Killed By Speeding Taxi—Community Demands Safer Roads

The tragic death of a Manenberg mom, Louise Diedericks (50), has reignited calls for urgent traffic-calming measures along Duinefontein Road, a notorious hotspot for reckless driving.

Taxi Crashes into Pedestrian After Running Red Light

Diedericks was on her way home from work on Monday night when she was struck by a speeding taxi at the intersection of Duinefontein Road and Jordaan Street.

Her devastated daughter, Laeeqah Swartz (29), rushed to the scene after being informed of the accident, only to find that paramedics had already covered her mother’s body.

“She was crossing the road when the taxi jumped a red robot and crashed into her. People on the scene told us she was still standing in the yellow lane when the taxi hit her,” Swartz said.

“She worked hard every day for her family. My mom was a loving person, and we are still in shock that she is no longer with us.”

The taxi driver, a 31-year-old man, was arrested and will appear at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.

Calls for Urgent Traffic-Calming Measures

The Manenberg Community Police Forum (CPF) has once again raised concerns about Duinefontein Road, a major arterial route where taxis and other vehicles are frequently seen speeding and ignoring traffic lights.

CPF spokesperson Vernon Visagie said: “This road runs right through Manenberg and Heideveld, and we have lost too many lives here due to reckless driving.

Motorists, especially taxi drivers, ignore red lights, putting pedestrians—especially children—at serious risk.”

Authorities Urged to Take Action

Community leaders have previously requested speed humps, but the proposal was rejected. Now, they are pushing for a footbridge or other safety measures to protect residents.

“We don’t know if a footbridge will solve the problem, but something has to be done before more lives are lost,” Visagie added.

The Athlone Magistrate’s Court will decide the fate of the arrested taxi driver, while local authorities face increasing pressure to introduce life-saving road safety measures on Duinefontein Road.

Residents and activists are urging the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Department of Transport to take action before another family suffers a similar tragedy.
