Man Stabbed To Death In Free State Tavern After R5 Dispute

A 22-year-old man is facing a murder charge after allegedly stabbing another man to death following a dispute over R5 during a pool game at a tavern in Philippolis, Free State. The altercation took place around 1:30 am on Saturday when tensions escalated, leading the suspect to break a bottle and stab his 22-year-old opponent in the neck.

The victim managed to step outside before collapsing and succumbing to his injuries. Police were called to the scene by concerned community members and discovered his lifeless body.

Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest

Authorities launched an investigation immediately, and with assistance from the community, the suspect was traced and arrested later the same day. He is set to appear before the Philippolis Magistrate’s Court soon to face a murder charge.

Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Martin Xuma highlighted ongoing efforts to prevent such violent incidents, including monthly meetings with tavern owners to discuss safety measures and trading conditions.

“Whenever a patron comes in, he or she needs to be searched to ensure they are not carrying any dangerous weapon,” Xuma stated. However, he acknowledged that in this case, the suspect used a broken bottle from inside the tavern as a weapon.

Police continue to emphasise the importance of strict security measures and community cooperation to curb violent altercations in nightlife establishments.
