Man Shot Dead Inside Elsies River Home In Suspected Gang-Related Hit

A 30-year-old man was shot and killed inside his home in Clarke Estate, Elsies River, on Tuesday evening in what police suspect is a gang-related attack.

Residents in the area believe the shooting may have been a targeted hit after the gunman allegedly entered the victim’s house before opening fire. The incident happened at Martindale Court in Liederman Street.

Police confirmed that a murder case has been opened following the fatal shooting.

Elsies River Gang Shooting Leaves Community On Edge

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk said officers responded to reports of a shooting at around 5.50pm on Tuesday.

“Elsies River police registered a murder case following a shooting incident on Tuesday, 26 May at 5.50pm at Martindale Court, Liederman Street, Clarke Estate, Elsies River, in which a 30-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded,” he said.

“The members attended to a complaint of a shooting incident at the mentioned address and, upon their arrival, found the body of the victim with multiple gunshot wounds lying on his back in the living room used as a bedroom.

“The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel and was transported to a nearby mortuary by Forensic Pathology Services.

“The motive is believed to be gang-related.”

Targeted Hit Suspected In Elsies River Murder

A community leader from Clarke Estate said residents had experienced a relatively calm period before the latest shooting.

“The community has been quiet recently when it comes to the shootings, but this shooting was an isolated incident involving gangs,” the community leader said.

“It could be that this shooting was a targeted hit because they went inside his house and shot him dead.”

The killing has once again raised concerns over gang violence in parts of Elsies River.

Eskom Power Outages Spark Protests In Elsies River

While residents were still reacting to the shooting, frustration also boiled over on Wednesday morning over ongoing electricity outages in the area.

When Daily Voice visited Elsies River, sections of Owen Road had been blocked by protesters burning tyres during demonstrations linked to power cuts affecting parts of the community.

One frustrated resident said the electricity problems had persisted for years.

“The power goes on, then it goes off, just randomly, and you don’t know when it is going to come back on. We are losing appliances and our food is going off, especially our vleis,” he said.

Eskom said several areas remained without electricity due to severe weather conditions in the Western Cape.
