Man Killed, 2 Officers Injured In Shootout At Alexandra Police Station

Two police officers have been hospitalised following a shooting incident inside the Alexandra police station on Thursday morning.

According to Police Deputy Provincial Commissioner Maj-Gen Fred Kekana, the officers were shot in their right shoulders. The incident occurred around 10 AM when a man entered the station, claiming someone was trying to kill him. There were several community members present at the station at the time.

Maj-Gen Kekana provided details of the incident, stating, “An officer was seated behind the counter and writing a statement when the man walked in and grabbed that police officer’s firearm. The police officer was wearing civilian clothes and the firearm was in the holster. The man seized the firearm and began shooting randomly.

“Unfortunately, during the chaos, he shot a 48-year-old sergeant and a 27-year-old constable. Both officers are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition.”

Alexandra Police Station Suspect

Maj-Gen Kekana confirmed that the suspect was fatally wounded when police returned fire. The stolen firearm was subsequently recovered.

A source at the police station described the suspect’s behaviour before the incident: “He was sitting there as if he wanted to certify documents. He sat for some time, then moved to other police officers’ rooms before returning to his seat. Suddenly, he sprang up, grabbed a gun from a police officer, and started shooting. He shot two police officers.”

The investigation into the incident continues. The police have not released any further details at this time.
