Man Jailed For Killing 11-Month-Old Baby With A Cricket Bat

A 24-year-old man has been handed a lengthy prison sentence after an 11-month-old baby died following a violent assault involving a cricket bat.
Samuel Pieters was sentenced in the Phillipstown Regional Court after pleading guilty to the murder of infant Aidan Booysen.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the incident took place on 30 November 2024 at the home of Pieters’ girlfriend.

“The court heard that on 30 November 2024, the accused went to his girlfriend’s residence, where an argument ensued between them.

Court Hears Details Of Fatal Attack, Sentences Man
During proceedings, prosecutor Kagisho Phagana Marame presented a Victim Impact Statement compiled by Trott Manghana.
The statement outlined the deep emotional and psychological trauma experienced by the child’s mother following the tragedy.
While the court acknowledged that Pieters was a first-time offender and had pleaded guilty — factors considered substantial and compelling — it ruled that the gravity of the crime justified a severe sentence.
He was sentenced to 30 years’ direct imprisonment and declared unfit to possess a firearm.
