Man Arrested In Multi-Billion Rand Gold Mining Case

Loren Louw, 47, appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on Monday after he was arrested in connection with a R2.6 billion illicit precious metals case. The case has been postponed to March 17, 2025. Louw appeared in the Brakpan Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing 1,176 counts of money laundering and contraventions of the Precious Metals Act.

Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said Louw was initially arrested on February 26, 2015, during Operation Tarantula, led by the Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit in North West. During the operation, unwrought gold valued at R2.5 million was seized.

“At the time, the case was withdrawn for further investigation. However, in October 2024, Louw was served with summons to appear in court, where he now faces charges amounting to R2.6 billion,” Mogale explained.

Illegal Mining Operations in Stilfontein

Meanwhile, efforts to curb illegal mining activities in the Stilfontein mine have led to the arrest of 1,259 illegal miners, also known as zama zamas, since August 18, 2024. According to North West community safety and transport management MEC Wessels Morweng, the majority of those arrested are foreign nationals.

“Of the 1,259 arrested, 871 are Mozambicans, 343 are Zimbabweans, 33 are Lesotho nationals, one is Malawian, and only 10 are South Africans,” Morweng revealed.

Morweng and Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Major General Patrick Asaneng, briefed the media on the progress of recent operations. They emphasized that a special task team established by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is actively working to end illegal mining in the Stilfontein area.

Ongoing Operations and Arrests

The arrests stem from ongoing operations aimed at rescuing illegal miners and curbing organized crime linked to the mining sector. Illegal mining has been flagged as a significant challenge in South Africa, with foreign nationals forming a large portion of those involved in such activities.

Authorities remain committed to dismantling these operations and restoring order in affected mining regions.
