The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Kranskop has secured the conviction of Ayanda Fulela (29),following the meticulous efforts of Kranskop detectives.

A statement on Friday by SAPS, stated that, the successful prosecution of Fulela came after a thorough investigation into the murder of his 72-year-old grandmother in Nseleni, within the Kranskop policing precinct.

Fulela was sentenced in March 2025 for the horrific crime, which took place in December 2024.

Crime History

On 2 January 2025, a missing person’s case was reported after the elderly woman was found to have been missing for two days.

In response, Kranskop detectives, led by Detective Sergeant Thobelani Khoza, immediately launched an investigation.

Their fast action and detailed inquiry soon led them to the home of the complainant, where they gathered evidence pointing to Fulela as the primary suspect.

Fulela Confesses To Murder And Attempted Concealment Of Crime

As the investigation unfolded, Fulela was questioned and, under pressure, confessed to the brutal murder of his grandmother.

He revealed that the crime was the result of a heated argument between them, during which he fatally stabbed the elderly woman.

In a further attempt to cover up his actions, Fulela set her body on fire.

Greytown Regional Court Delivers Sentence

On 4 March 2025, the Greytown Regional Court found Ayanda Fulela guilty of murder and the violation of a corpse.

He was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his grandmother, a sentence that reflects the gravity of the crime.

Additionally, Fulela received a ten-year sentence for violating a corpse, a further reminder of the heinous nature of his actions.

The court also declared Fulela unfit to possess a firearm, ensuring he would not be able to legally carry a weapon in the future.
