Mamelodi Residents Threaten City Shutdown After Cousins’ Brutal Murder

Residents of Mamelodi are threatening to shut down parts of Tshwane on Monday in protest over the brutal killing of two young women that has shaken the community.

The victims, 21-year-old Baleseng and 22-year-old Tshiamo Moramaga, who were cousins, were shot and left for dead by the roadside more than a week ago. Their deaths have sparked outrage and calls for urgent government intervention.

The pair were laid to rest on Saturday, with mourners demanding justice and accountability. Police have since arrested 38-year-old Tebogo Mnisi, believed to be the boyfriend of one of the victims, in connection with the murders.

Community Demands Action From Officials

Civic organisation Soil of Africa has called on Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya and Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi to meet with the community to discuss concrete plans to curb the escalating violence in Mamelodi.

Soil of Africa’s representative, Bongani Ramontja, expressed frustration over what he described as government inaction in addressing the safety crisis.

Ramontja warned that the community would bring parts of the city to a halt if authorities continued to ignore their pleas for protection.

“We have metro police, but they are nowhere to be found in high-risk areas. Who is holding the station commanders and police accountable for these deaths? The silence of the City of Tshwane is a betrayal of its own people,” he said.

Residents say the planned shutdown will serve as a wake-up call for government leaders to prioritise the safety of women and ensure justice for the slain cousins.
