Malusi Gigaba Steps Aside From ANC Roles After New Corruption Charge

African National Congress (ANC) MP Malusi Gigaba has stepped aside from all party responsibilities after being hit with a fresh corruption charge.

The ANC confirmed the move in a statement on Wednesday, welcoming Gigaba’s decision to vacate his roles.

His step-aside announcement affects both his position in the party’s national executive committee (NEC) and his seat in the National Assembly.

On Tuesday, Gigaba appeared before the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court alongside four former Transnet executives — Brian Molefe, Siyabonga Gama, Anoj Singh and Thamsanqa Jiyane — on a corruption charge.

The case stems from alleged tender irregularities at Transnet during Gigaba’s time as minister of public enterprises. He and the former executives face accusations relating to procurement processes at the state-owned entity.

Gigaba’s court appearance marks the latest development in the long-running investigations into procurement misconduct at major state-owned enterprises.

ANC’s Step-Aside Rule Enforced

Under the ANC’s step-aside rule, any member formally charged in court must relinquish all government and party roles. The rule aims to protect the party’s integrity amid ongoing efforts to address corruption concerns.

Gigaba’s decision aligns with these requirements, pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.
