Malmesbury Mass Shooting: Suspect Arrested After Pregnant Woman And Man Killed

A breakthrough has been made in the investigation into the deadly Malmesbury mass shooting after police arrested a suspect linked to the attack. The shooting left two people dead, including a pregnant woman, and several others wounded. Investigators are continuing to search for answers as the case unfolds.

The violence erupted during the early hours of Sunday in the Wesbank area of Malmesbury. Police believe a group of people had been socialising when gunmen launched a deadly attack. A one-year-old child was among those injured.

Malmesbury Mass Shooting Leaves Two Dead And Eight Injured

The Malmesbury mass shooting happened at about 4:40am in Godetia Street, Wesbank. According to police, a group was sitting outside drinking when the attackers allegedly entered through a neighbouring property before opening fire through a barbed-wire fence. The attack killed a 21-year-old pregnant woman and a 22-year-old man.

The woman’s one-year-old son was shot in the face while in her arms during the incident. Six other adults and the toddler were rushed to hospital for medical treatment. Police later confirmed that the number of attempted murder victims had risen from seven to eight.

Malmesbury Mass Shooting Suspect Arrested

Western Cape police have confirmed the arrest of a 27-year-old man in connection with the shooting. The suspect was taken into custody on Monday following an intensive investigation by SAPS detectives. He is expected to appear in the Malmesbury Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 14 July 2026.

Colonel Andrè Traut confirmed the arrest.

“An intensive investigation by SAPS detectives has resulted in the arrest of a 27-year-old suspect in connection with a fatal shooting incident that occurred in Wesbank, Malmesbury, during the early hours of Sunday, 12 July 2026.

“The suspect was arrested on Monday, 13 July 2026, and is expected to appear in the Malmesbury Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, on charges relating to the incident.

Malmesbury Mass Shooting Investigation Continues

Police say investigations into the Malmesbury mass shooting remain ongoing as detectives work to establish the motive behind the attack. Officers are also trying to determine whether more suspects were involved. Additional arrests have not been ruled out.

“The shooting claimed the lives of a 22-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman. Subsequent investigations have established that the number of attempted murder victims has increased from seven to eight. The fatalities remain unchanged at two.

“Detectives are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and to establish whether additional suspects were involved.

“Policing in the area remains reinforced to prevent further violence and any possible retaliatory attacks.”

Police have maintained an increased presence in Wesbank following the shooting. Authorities say the additional deployment is aimed at preventing further violence and ensuring community safety while the investigation continues.
