Malesela Teffo has been arrested after officials at the Legal Practice Council (LPC) alerted police to his presence at its premises. The disbarred advocate had reportedly gone to the council to obtain a certificate of good standing when officers arrived and took him into custody.

A warrant had previously been issued for Teffo’s arrest. He is now being held in police custody following the intervention by law enforcement at the LPC offices.

Teffo was struck off the roll of legal practitioners in 2022 following findings of professional misconduct. His latest arrest comes after his controversial involvement in the Johannesburg High Court proceedings involving Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his co-accused.

Teffo reportedly approached the LPC to obtain documentation confirming his standing as a legal practitioner. However, officials alerted the police instead, resulting in his arrest at the council’s premises.

His arrest marks another development in the troubled legal career of the former advocate, who became widely known through his involvement in high-profile criminal proceedings.

Teffo rose to prominence during the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial, where he represented some of the accused before his legal career came under increasing scrutiny.

Malesela Teffo’s High-Profile Court Involvement

The arrest follows Teffo’s unauthorised appearance as a “friend of the court” during the attempted murder trial of Matlala and others in the Johannesburg High Court. His involvement in the proceedings drew attention because of his previous role in the Meyiwa murder case.

Teffo’s decision to appear in the matter came despite him having been struck off the roll several years earlier. His attempt to obtain a certificate of good standing from the LPC has now ended with him being taken into police custody.

The latest development is expected to renew questions around Teffo’s legal status and his continued attempts to participate in court proceedings after being disbarred.

Malesela Teffo Arrest Sparks Public Debate

Teffo’s arrest has already generated mixed reactions among members of the public, particularly because of his association with the long-running investigation and trial surrounding the murder of former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

Some members of the public have linked his case to broader frustrations surrounding the handling of the Meyiwa investigation, while others have questioned whether authorities have acted appropriately in pursuing the matter.

For now, Teffo remains in police custody following his arrest at the LPC. Further developments are expected as the authorities proceed with the case against the former advocate.
