Malema Firearm Case Verdict: EFF Leader To Learn Sentence Today In East London Court

The leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, Julius Malema, is expected to learn his sentence today as the East London Magistrate’s Court in KuGompo City, Eastern Cape, delivers judgment in his firearm case.

Proceedings on Wednesday focused on arguments in mitigation and aggravation of sentence. The state argued for a custodial sentence, while Malema’s defence team pushed for a non-custodial outcome.

Malema was previously convicted of discharging a firearm in a public setting, following an incident that took place during the EFF’s fifth-anniversary celebrations in Mdantsane in 2018.

Court Sentencing In Malema Firearm Case Draws National Attention

The case has attracted widespread interest, given the high-profile nature of the accused and the circumstances surrounding the incident. The court is now tasked with determining an appropriate sentence after hearing submissions from both sides.

State prosecutor Advocate Joel Ceasar told the court that the EFF leader had not demonstrated remorse for his actions, which he argued posed a risk to public safety.

“The outcry because of that shows that that should not be tolerated in a civilised society, where people’s lives are placed in danger for people who are in a celebratory mood, firing shots.

“In this instant, the accused did not just fire one shot and leave it at that, which can be considered an accident. His actions constitute extreme danger to the 20.000 plus people that were present, not to mention the big community of Mdantsane,” explains State prosecutor.
