Nurse Claims “Love Relationship” With Victim

The alleged nurse who worked at a Netcare private hospital in Springs, claimed he was in a “love relationship” with the teenage victim.

However, the court rejected this claim, citing the power imbalance between the nurse and the patient.

The accused, who cannot be named until he has pleaded, was arrested on February 12 after community members reported his suspicious behavior.

He was accused to have made advances towards the 17-year-old victim while still admitted at the hospital for a medical procedure.

After the victim’s medical aid was depleted, the nurse allegedly promised to continue caring for him and bring him medication at his home.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)  opposed the bail application, arguing that the nurse took advantage of the victim’s vulnerable condition and posed a flight risk.

Prosecutor Tumelo Madisha told the court that the nurse had failed to provide an alternative address, which raised concerns about his potential to flee.

“The accused exploited the victim’s vulnerability and took advantage of his position as a healthcare professional,” Madisha said.

“We believe that he poses a significant risk to the community, particularly to vulnerable individuals.”

Community Outrage

Residents of the community in a widespread outrage, expressed shock and disgust at the allegations against the nurse.

The hospital where the nurse worked has also come under scrutiny, with questions raised about negligence and how the alleged abuse was allowed to occur.
