Malawian National Dies During Voluntary Repatriation Process, South Africa Extends Condolences

A Malawian national has died during South Africa’s ongoing voluntary repatriation process, prompting the government to extend its condolences to the deceased’s family and the people of Malawi.

The incident happened as dozens of Malawian nationals were travelling back to their home country following the voluntary repatriation process that began after last week’s anti-illegal immigration protests.

Government said the passenger suffered a medical emergency while travelling on one of the buses transporting returnees.

Malawian National Dies During Repatriation Journey

The Malawian national died after a bus carrying repatriated citizens had already left the processing centre.

According to government, the bus turned around after the passenger experienced a medical emergency. Police were called to the scene to carry out the required forensic and investigative procedures before the bus was allowed to continue its journey to Malawi.

Authorities have not released further details regarding the cause of death.

South Africa To Inform Malawi Through Diplomatic Channels

The national’s death will be formally communicated to the Malawian government through diplomatic channels.

Deputy government spokesperson William Baloyi said South Africa would ensure the relevant authorities in Malawi were informed of the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“On behalf of government and the people of South Africa, we convey our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, loved ones, fellow travellers and the government and people of the Republic of Malawi during this difficult time.”

The voluntary repatriation process was launched after anti-illegal immigration protests that took place last week.

Scores of Malawian nationals have since opted to return home as part of the ongoing operation. Authorities have not indicated whether the repatriation programme will continue as scheduled following the incident.
