Malawian Man Found Hanging From Electricity Pylon In Cape Town

Motorists in Strand, Cape Town were met with a shocking sight on Monday morning when the body of a Malawian was discovered hanging from an electricity pylon in an open field near Strand Main Road at around 6:30am.
The deceased, a 46-year-old Malawian national, was found with a rope around his neck in what authorities believe to be a case of suicide.
Police spokesperson Speaks on the Malawian’s death
City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse said emergency personnel from the Strand Fire Station were called to the scene at approximately 7:40am. “The fire crew had to cut through barbed wire to reach the victim. Just as they finished cutting the wire, the rope around the victim’s neck snapped and he fell to the ground,” Carelse said.
He added that the man was declared deceased by medical personnel on the scene, and the area was handed over to police for investigation.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi confirmed that a case of inquest has been registered. “Strand police found the body of a man with a rope tied around his neck on an electric tower. The circumstances surrounding this incident are under investigation,” Swartbooi said.
Second Incident in Somerset West
Just over three kilometres away, police in Somerset West responded to another apparent suicide less than two hours later. A 27-year-old man was found dead inside his vehicle in the parking area of the Melcksloot Village Centre at around 8:45am.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the discovery. “Somerset West police registered an inquest for investigation after the body of a 27-year-old male was found inside his vehicle with an open wound to his head. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death,” Twigg said.
