Malaria Alert: Gauteng Records Surge In Cases And Deaths As Health Officials Sound Warning

The Gauteng Department of Health has raised alarm over a sharp increase in malaria infections and deaths across the province.

According to surveillance data, 666 malaria cases and seven deaths were recorded between January and December 2025. However, the situation has escalated in 2026, with 414 confirmed cases and 11 deaths already reported in the first quarter alone.

Travel to High-Risk Regions Driving Malaria Surge

Health officials say the spike is largely linked to increased travel to malaria-endemic areas during and after the festive season.

These regions include Limpopo, Mpumalanga, as well as neighbouring countries such as Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Malawi.

Programme Manager for Communicable Disease Control, Tebogo Matjokotja, emphasised the importance of taking precautions.

“Preventive measures, including the use of insect repellent and wearing protective clothing, remain essential to reduce the risk of infection.”

Health Department Urges Early Treatment and Prevention

Malaria, transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito, is both preventable and treatable. However, officials warn that delays in seeking medical care can lead to severe illness or death.

“GDoH urges residents to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their families. The department continues to closely monitor the situation and is strengthening public health interventions to control the spread of malaria and reduce mortality across the province.”

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant, especially if they have recently travelled to high-risk areas.
