Makausi Informal Settlement Fire Displaces 18 Families As Emergency Response Saves Lives

A swift and coordinated emergency response prevented a greater tragedy after a fire tore through the Makausi informal settlement in Primrose early Wednesday morning.

The blaze, which required multiple firefighting units to bring under control, has left approximately 18 families without homes as this report is compiled.

The City of Ekurhuleni Call Centre received the alert and immediately dispatched crews.

The Primrose fire station led the effort, with crucial backup provided by the Bedford View, Edenvale, Albertina Sisulu, and Rynfield fire stations. Their combined efforts successfully contained the fire, SurgeZirc SA learned.

Two Residents Injured and Hospitalized Following the Makausi Informal Settlement Fire

The incident resulted in injuries to two individuals. One person sustained leg injuries while courageously assisting community efforts to fight the flames.

A second victim was treated for smoke inhalation. Gauteng Emergency Management Services (EMS) transported both patients to Germiston Hospital for further medical care.

SurgeZirc SA could not confirm the cause of the destructive fire, but authorities have assured that the investigation to find what caused it is ongoing.

The immediate focus now shifts to the displaced families, who have lost their homes and belongings, as community organizations begin to mobilize support for their quick recovery.
