Major Road Closures In Pretoria As Protesters March To Home Affairs Over Blocked IDs

Motorists travelling through Pretoria on Monday are urged to plan ahead and expect significant delays, as several major roads will be closed for a protest march targeting the Department of Home Affairs.

The demonstration, organised by the human rights group Soil of Africa, seeks to draw attention to South African citizens whose Identity Documents (IDs) have been blocked without valid justification.

According to organisers, the march aims to pressure the department into addressing what they describe as “unfair ID blockages” that have left many citizens unable to access essential services.

Protest Route and Timing

The protest will kick off at the Old Putco Depot in Marabastad from 09:00, with participants expected to make their way to the Department of Home Affairs Head Office in Pretoria’s city centre. Demonstrators are anticipated to disperse by 14:00.

Authorities have advised that the march will lead to heavy traffic congestion across key parts of the Tshwane CBD, and motorists should use alternative routes where possible.

Roads affected by closures include Struben Street, Kgosi Mampuru Street, Sophie de Bruyn Street, Bosman Street, Paul Kruger Street, Thabo Sehume Street, and Johannes Ramokhoase Street.

The Tshwane Metro Police Department and the South African Police Service (SAPS) will be deployed along the route to ensure safety and manage traffic flow.

Motorists are encouraged to consider alternative routes such as Pretorius Street, Eskia Mphahlele Drive, Boom Street, Nelson Mandela Drive, Sisulu Street, Nana Sita Street, and Francis Baard Street.

Officials have appealed to the public to remain patient and allow peaceful protest action to proceed while minimising disruptions.
