Major-General Motsepe Says She Criticised PKTT Disbandment Ahead Of Elections

The South African Police Service’s Serious and Violent Crime Division head, Major-General Mary Motsepe, has stated she did not support the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT).

Motsepe made the remarks while testifying at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria.

The KwaZulu-Natal PKTT was dissolved last December by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, who is currently on leave. At that time, 121 case dockets were seized from the team. The PKTT has since been reinstated.

Major-General Motsepe Calls Out Lack of Consultation in PKTT Disbandment

Speaking to the Commission, Major-General Motsepe emphasised that the Minister should have consulted all relevant stakeholders before taking such a decision.

“Even if the Minister had the authority to disband the PKTT, he had to first consult with all the relevant stakeholders, which would have included me as the component responsible for serious and violent crimes,” she said.

Motsepe also voiced her disagreement with the timing of the disbandment, noting the heightened risk of politically motivated violence in KwaZulu-Natal before elections.

“I also do not agree that the PKTT should have been disbanded before the upcoming elections. It is a well-known fact that KZN has the highest incidence of political killings, and there’s usually a spike in politically motivated killings before elections,” she told the Commission.
