Major Abalone Bust In Northern Cape: Five Arrested For Illegal Possession

On the morning of Saturday, 26 April 2025, five individuals in connection with illegal abalone possession were arrested .

Acting on intelligence regarding suspicious activity, authorities uncovered an illegal abalone operation at a farmhouse in Douglas.

Abalone Seizure Worth Nearly R2 Million

During a comprehensive search of the premises, investigators discovered several containers filled with a substantial amount.

The South African Police Service (SAPS), in collaboration with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, estimated the street value of the confiscated abalone to be approximately R1 970 829.

The find is one of the largest busts of its kind in the region.

Five Suspects Arrested, Including Foreign Nationals

The operation led to the arrest of five suspects, including two Malawian nationals and three Chinese nationals, aged between 18 and 60.

The suspects face serious charges of illegal possession.

The Department of Home Affairs is currently assisting in verifying the immigration status of the arrested individuals.

Vehicles Seized

In addition, law enforcement also confiscated several exhibits and two vehicles—a Toyota Hilux bakkie and a Nissan NP200—believed to have been used in the illegal activities.

Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, with further arrests and actions expected as they continue to dismantle illegal marine-related crimes.
