Madlanga Commission: PKTT Officer Shocked By Hawks’ Disruption During Molefe Arrest

A member of the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has told the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry that he was left puzzled by the unusually high number of Hawks officers who disrupted the planned “take-down operation” of alleged crime boss Katiso “KT” Molefe.

Testifying before the commission on Wednesday morning, Captain Maxwell Wanda said he was one of the officers who carried out the raid on Molefe’s home in December 2024. The operation was linked to the investigation into the murder of engineer Armand Swart.

Swart was reportedly killed after his company exposed a corrupt Transnet tender allegedly connected to Molefe’s nephew.

Hawks’ Unexpected Intervention Raises Questions

On 6 December 2024, the PKTT conducted the raid at Molefe’s residence, arresting him and carrying out a thorough search of the property. Moments later, however, the officers were caught off guard when a large group of what Wanda described as “very aggressive” Hawks members interrupted the operation.

According to Wanda, the Hawks claimed they believed the task team officers were impostors pretending to be part of an official police unit.

“I did not expect the presence of the Hawks during that operation. The presence of the Hawks was concerning to me because they came in numbers,” he told the commission.

Wanda added that shortly after the Hawks arrived, a helicopter was seen hovering over Molefe’s house, further intensifying the situation.

It has been alleged that former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya was responsible for sending the officers to disrupt the task team’s operation.
