Madlanga Commission Next Witness To Testify Remotely And Off-Camera

The Madlanga Commission of Inquiry will hear testimony from an anonymous witness this week, with proceedings scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday. The witness has been granted permission to testify remotely and off-camera to protect their identity.

This follows an application by News24 and Daily Maverick opposing the decision to have the testimony heard in-camera.

Justice Madlanga Rules on Remote Testimony Procedure

Commission chair Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga ruled on Tuesday morning that one of the evidence leaders will serve as an intermediary during the witness’s testimony.

This means the witness will respond to questions privately, and their answers will be relayed to the public through Advocate Thabang Pooe, who will repeat the responses on their behalf.

“The witness will testify remotely and off-camera,” Justice Madlanga explained. “The answers of the witness to questions posed by the evidence leaders will be repeated publicly through an intermediary, whose voice will be broadcast live, as he or she will repeat the witness’s words.”

A decision has not yet been made regarding whether the witness’s testimony will continue on Thursday and Friday. Justice Madlanga said a ruling on this will be delivered on Wednesday.

The Commission continues its work amid heightened public and media interest as more witnesses are expected to come forward in the coming weeks.
