Madlanga Commission Hears Testimony Linking Mchunu To Alleged Crime Boss Molefe

Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu is once again in the spotlight after the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry heard explosive testimony alleging that he has ties to an alleged criminal, Katiso “KT” Molefe.

On Wednesday, Captain Maxwell Wanda, a former member of the political killings task team, took the stand and detailed the events surrounding Molefe’s December 2024 arrest. Wanda claimed that during the police raid on Molefe’s home, he received information suggesting a close relationship between the alleged crime figure and Mchunu.

According to Wanda, a man believed to be Molefe’s driver or bodyguard told him that the suspended minister and Molefe were friends. The operation in question was part of an effort to apprehend Molefe in connection with the murder of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart.

Captain Wanda testified that he met a man named Lehasa Moloi in Molefe’s yard during the raid. Moloi reportedly asked for water and a cigarette, which Wanda arranged through Molefe’s eldest son.

However, the conversation quickly took an unexpected turn. Wanda told the commission that Moloi made a startling statement while smoking.

“He asked me a question that ‘What is going to happen now because the arrested person is the friend of the minister of police?’ I asked him who the minister is and he said the minister of police. I asked him if it was honourable Senzo Mchunu and then he said yes,” Wanda recalled.

Mchunu Denies Ties to Underworld Figures

This isn’t the first time the suspended minister’s name has surfaced in connection with alleged underworld figures. Mchunu has also been accused of having links to Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala, another suspected crime boss.

Mchunu has denied knowing any of the criminal figures.

However, Mchunu has strongly denied any involvement with criminal networks, telling Parliament last week that the claims against him are entirely false.
