Madlanga Commission Hears Matlala Recording Linking Him To Sibiya: ‘He’s A Criminal Himself’

Accused tender mogul Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala has made explosive allegations before the Madlanga Commission, claiming he handed suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya R300,000 as a wedding gift for his son.

The revelation came from a recording played before the commission on Thursday, in which Matlala was heard confessing to investigators about his dealings with Sibiya. The recording was captured by “Witness C”, one of the detectives who arrested Matlala in May this year.

In the four-hour-long audio, Matlala recounted attending Sibiya’s son’s wedding, where he reportedly arrived in a Rolls-Royce and presented the cash gift.

In one section of the recording, Matlala can be heard saying: “But remember I withdrew about R500,000 and gave him (Sibiya) about R300,000 as a contribution for his son.”

When investigators pressed him on how he knew Sibiya, Matlala made a sensational remark: “He’s a criminal himself, Sibiya.”

Evidence leaders confirmed that the full transcript of Matlala’s recorded interview with investigators will soon be made public.

“Witness C” has since completed his testimony before the commission. Proceedings are expected to continue on Monday, where further evidence linked to Matlala’s statements is likely to be examined.

Sibiya, who has acknowledged knowing both Brown Mogotsi and Matlala, is yet to respond in detail to the claims aired during the commission.
