Madlanga Commission Allows Witness G To Testify Off-Screen Over Safety Fears

The Madlanga Commission has ruled that Witness G will deliver testimony virtually and without appearing on camera.

In a directive issued this week, the Commission confirmed that the witness would participate remotely, with only audio being broadcast to the public.

“The appearance of the applicant before this Commission shall be conducted virtually and off-screen, but with an audio broadcast,” the Commission said.

Witness G’s Lawyer Cites High-Risk Work and Informant Protection

Witness G’s legal representative, Tshepo Matlala, told the Commission that his client is involved in sensitive, high-risk covert operations in Gauteng.

Matlala explained that the nature of the work involves close collaboration with informants, raising serious safety concerns if the witness’s identity were to be exposed.

He warned that being publicly identified alongside informants could place multiple lives in danger, prompting the request for strict protective measures.

Strict Access Rules for Hearing Proceedings

The Commission also outlined who will be allowed inside the hearing while Witness G gives evidence.

“Only the following persons shall be permitted to remain present during the hearing of the applicant’s evidence: the Commissioners, Evidence Leaders and staff of the Commission; and the parties and their legal representatives.”

The decision aims to balance transparency with security, ensuring proceedings remain accessible while safeguarding those involved.
